For a vast majority of us summer, and the intoxicatingly terrific bouts of musical adventure it brings, is drawing to a close and in all honesty it is a rather sobering thought. Of course there are still the likes of Bestival, Beacons, Rebellion and the enchanting festival number 6 to temporarily lift our spirits and distract us from the harsh reality that the office desk, uncomfortable chair and unnaturally long essay is ever looming, at least for another year.

But please, don’t despair just yet, as for one, it’s Friday and two our track of the day is enough to lighten the mood for everyone who has spent up, gigged out and flown back from wherever the sun’s rays may have led. So allow yourself (it would be hard not to) to enjoy the ridiculous musical talents of Marta Ren & The Groovelvets as the Portuguese soul diva and her band of funktastic minstrel’s tune 2 Kinds of Men has been selected for just that reason.

Part of an explosive 45 double sider, in which 2 Kinds of Men shares the wax with another huge track Summer’s gone (didn’t swim), Marta Ren offers an exceedingly brilliant vocal effort laced with boom- bap drums, loaded with a tantalising bass line and a funk groove sleazier than one of Craig Charles’s crack pipes… in the best possible way.

Signed to the burgeoning Record Kicks label that houses scores of like-minded musical brothers and sisters, Marta Ren & The Groovelvets are the business, so expect big things to come!
